The cast for Ryan Gosling’s writing and directing debut How to Catch a Monster keeps on growing (and getting better), now that Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan is joining an acting crew that includes Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Eva Mendes and lauded character actor Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines).

Ronan, who turns 18 this April, already has several acclaimed performances under her belt, including her roles in director Joe Wright’s Atonement (which landed her an Oscar nod) and Hanna. She’s not going to slow down either, with a starring role in Andrew Niccol’s The Host – based on Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s novel – and Neil Jordan’s vampire drama Byzantium this year, in addition to appearing in Wes Anderson’s next project The Grand Budapest Hotel (which is currently in the midst of production) as well as the period royalty tale Mary Queen of Scots somewhere down the line.

HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER weaves elements of fantasy noir, and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son, Bones, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.

Hendricks is headlining as Billy, an employee of a strange and mysterious fetish club (kind of a redundant description, I know) called The Big Bad Wolf Club, where Mendes shows up as one of her more popular coworkers. The Bones character role is unoccupied for the time being, while it remains unclear how the rest of the cast fits into this bizarre puzzle (and if people such as Ronan and Smith are essential to the main narrative proceedings).
