Saoirse Testing for “Cinderella”
Posted by Sarks on December 01, 2012 with 0 Comments
According to Variety, a usually reliable source, Saoirse is testing to play the role of Cinderella for a live-action version of the movie for Disney.
With Cate Blanchett in negotiations to play the evil stepmother in the Mouse House’s live-action remake of “Cinderella,” the studio has begun narrowing its search for the classic fairy tale’s title character, sure to be a star-making role.
The three foreign-born actresses who will soon be testing for director Mark Romanek are established Irish thesp Saoirse Ronan (“The Host”), up-and-coming Swedish thesp Alicia Vikander and Brit thesp Gabriella Wilde, who appeared in “The Three Musketeers” and just wrapped the role of Sue Snell in Sony/MGM’s “Carrie” remake.
Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”) wrote the pic, which Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada”) sold to Disney as a pitch back in 2010. Simon Kinberg (“Elysium”) is producing the project, which Disney set up in May 2010 following the success of its live-action adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland.”
Ronan has been in high demand since her breakout turn in 2007′s “Atonement.” Since then, Ronan has worked with top directors such as Peter Jackson and Joe Wright, and she’s due for another career boost when Open Road Films releases Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel “The Host” on March 29. Scheduling could prove a problem for Ronan, as next year, she’s due to play the female lead in Wes Anderson’s “Grand Budapest Hotel” and she’s also attached to star in Working Title’s historical drama “Mary Queen of Scots.” She’s repped by CAA and Macfarlane Chard.
Coincidentally, Ronan and Blanchett nearly worked together on Disney’s Snow White pic “Order of Seven” before that project was beaten to the starting line by Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” and Relativity Media’s “Mirror Mirror.”

Having established herself as one of the leading dramatic actresses of her generation with turns in “Atonement” and “The Lovely Bones,” Saoirse Ronan is looking to try her hand at lighter fare, as she’s set to play the female lead in Wes Anderson’s next movie “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”
As Variety first reported, Ralph Fiennes will star in the period pic alongside Jude Law and Anderson regulars Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, among others. While Anderson is fond of working with the same troupe of actors, he has actively recruited international thesps he’s never worked with before such as Fiennes, Law and now Irish thesp Ronan.
The director has said that the story, set 85 years ago in a Hungarian hotel, is partly inspired by the witty films of Billy Wilder and Ernst Lubitsch (“The Shop Around the Corner”).
Anderson is producing the Euro-set pic with his “Moonrise Kingdom” collaborators Scott Rudin and Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush. Production is skedded to start early next year in Germany.
Ronan, who was nominated for an Oscar at the age of 13 for her supporting perf in “Atonement,” will next be seen in Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel “The Host,” which Open Road Films will release March 29. Thesp is attached to star in Working Title’s drama “Mary Queen of Scots” and most recently wrapped Kevin Macdonald’s “How I Live Now,” while Neil Jordan’s “Byzantium” and Geoffrey Fletcher’s “Violet & Daisy” are awaiting release.
Ronan is repped by CAA and Macfarlane Chard.
